Okra for $3.32??!!!

If there’s a chance for us to visit Asian store we see to it that we buy vegetables even the prices are too much high. Like this okra or lady’s finger, we purchased it at T&T Supermarket, West Edmonton Mall, for $3.32 (0.302 Kg). Convert it and your jaw drops!!! Just like my first reaction... LOL.

It’s different back home, where we can pick vegetables in our garden or ask for vegetables in our neighbour. And the best thing is it’s fresh!

Corn

corn

This is one of my mom’s favorite foods. Every time I see vendors selling corn I will always buy for her. This food brings out the child in her (LOL)

Just a little fact:

Corn fiber is also good for reducing LDL (low density lipoproteins) or commonly known as “bad cholesterol”. My colleagues, especially those who have high bad cholesterol, eat corn as substitute to rice. Our canteen, before the management changed, served corn for lunch, but I haven’t tried it (*_*).

Corn is also good for diabetics according to the Department of Science and Technology- Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DoST-FNRI).

White corn contains low glycemic index (GI), which is the rank of food based on blood glucose response. Food that can easily be digested and could rapidly increase glucose in the blood are ranked 55 and up in terms of GI.

Food that is lower than 55 in GI cannot be digested easily. Therefore, the increase of glucose level in blood is slow and minimal. (Mitch Arceo) (Source)

Vegetables at our Backyard

Everything seems getting expensive; even leafy vegetables. Imagine a bundle of alugbati cost Php 10.00 which only cost 5.00 last month! Whoa! That’s 100 percent increased.

Because of that my mother decided to have a plot of different vegetables at our backyard: Alugbati, saluyot, sitaw, kalabasa, ampalaya, patani, sangig, to name a few. All mixed in one corner. Because of that, it looks like beans are producing ampalaya and the other way around. LOL….

I can’t imagine when the kalabasa plant will bear fruits. Kalabasa in an ampalaya plant? LOL... Anyway, mama is only after of the young leaves…
